Forbrich Charges Kelley with Multiple Violations of State Campaign Finance Laws, Asks DA for Full Investigation

San Antonio—Today, San Antonio City Council Candidate Chris Forbrich (District 1) charged opponent Carolyn Kelley with multiple violations of state campaign finance laws for accepting numerous corporate contributions.

Forbrich stated, “These aren’t minor, technical filing violations.  Ms. Kelley has solicited and received illegal corporate contributions.  This is long standing state law that every candidate in the state is aware of…except Ms. Kelley.”

According to campaign finance reports recently filed with the City of San Antonio, Carolyn Kelley accepted at least two illegal contributions totaling $800 in illegal funds.  A copy of the report can be found online: http://161.226.203.163/CampFinHistoricPDFFiles/rpt0000000909_20100712_092342.pdf.

“Ms. Kelley should immediately return these illegal contributions, report illegal activities to the City, the Texas Ethics Commission and the Bexar County District Attorney,” Forbrich continued.  “I also call on the DA’s office to investigate Ms. Kelley’s illegal activity and prosecute her to the fullest extent of the law.”

According to the Texas Ethics Commission website and staff, the recent Supreme Court of the United States ruling on corporate contributions did not negate existing state law and prohibitions on corporate contributions remain intact.  The TEC’s official statement and report can be found on their website: http://www.ethics.state.tx.us/opinions/489.html.

Forbrich concluded, “If Ms. Kelley cannot adequately follow the law and manage a small campaign budget, how can we believe that she can oversee a city budget for one of the largest city’s in the country?  San Antonio has seen enough ethics scandals.  We need principled, ethical leaders at city hall.  That is the kind of City Councilman I will be for District 1.”
