San Pedro Springs Library

The Friends of San Pedro Springs Park have just found out that the the San Pedro Branch Library hours are being cut. This comes at a great surprise to the friends because we had just read in the paper that our city on the economic front has faired well compared to other cities. The hours cut being proposed is two days (16 hrs) It is going from operating 56 hours a week to 40 hours. Not one of the other 24 branches is receiving a reduction.

The fight for our historical piece of San Antonio's Library system continues to loom over our head. It has been over 20 years of fighting,  and lobbying to maintain library services for this community. Can it be that we are on the wrong side of San Pedro Ave? Does it matter that these old neighborhoods around the park are seeing a tremendous boost in revitalization money and a are contributing to growing tax base,  that Mark Twain received over $17 million in upgrades a few years back,  that San Antonio College students need access to a first rate facility just across the street, that San Pedro Springs Park is right at it's back door, that several senior living establishments and schools are within blocks of its proximity, does it matter that this is still a library neighbors can walk to (many neighbors and students that cannot afford pcs), that the city spent over $950,00 dollars on it for much needed restoration and upgrades a few years ago,  that this is a working man and womens' library?  The San Pedro Branch is also recognized as being a wonderful children's library with 1/2 of the library's 4000 square feet dedicated to children. It's youth summer reading program came in 6th among all the branches.  Kids from various public and private schools take full advantage of its unique location in this city's oldest park.

The San Pedro Branch opened in 1929 and was the first permanent branch leading the way for our City's library system to evolve into the wide spread community-wide 25 branches of today, but has seen countless attacks on its existence. What do we have to do to stop this cloud that looms over our library every budget year?

The Friends of San Pedro Springs Park do not want to see any loss of staff or reduction of hours at our Branch.

Forbrich Charges Kelley with Multiple Violations of State Campaign Finance Laws, Asks DA for Full Investigation

San Antonio—Today, San Antonio City Council Candidate Chris Forbrich (District 1) charged opponent Carolyn Kelley with multiple violations of state campaign finance laws for accepting numerous corporate contributions.

Forbrich stated, “These aren’t minor, technical filing violations.  Ms. Kelley has solicited and received illegal corporate contributions.  This is long standing state law that every candidate in the state is aware of…except Ms. Kelley.”

According to campaign finance reports recently filed with the City of San Antonio, Carolyn Kelley accepted at least two illegal contributions totaling $800 in illegal funds.  A copy of the report can be found online: http://161.226.203.163/CampFinHistoricPDFFiles/rpt0000000909_20100712_092342.pdf.

“Ms. Kelley should immediately return these illegal contributions, report illegal activities to the City, the Texas Ethics Commission and the Bexar County District Attorney,” Forbrich continued.  “I also call on the DA’s office to investigate Ms. Kelley’s illegal activity and prosecute her to the fullest extent of the law.”

According to the Texas Ethics Commission website and staff, the recent Supreme Court of the United States ruling on corporate contributions did not negate existing state law and prohibitions on corporate contributions remain intact.  The TEC’s official statement and report can be found on their website: http://www.ethics.state.tx.us/opinions/489.html.

Forbrich concluded, “If Ms. Kelley cannot adequately follow the law and manage a small campaign budget, how can we believe that she can oversee a city budget for one of the largest city’s in the country?  San Antonio has seen enough ethics scandals.  We need principled, ethical leaders at city hall.  That is the kind of City Councilman I will be for District 1.”
